From April 7th to 10th, 2025, the Academy of Athens hosted the international conference “Aristotle in the Era of Artificial Intelligence”, in collaboration with the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts. The event brought together scholars of Aristotelian philosophy and AI researchers to explore the connections between Aristotle’s thought and the ethical, logical and political challenges posed by contemporary artificial intelligence.
Among the key contributors was Sara Greco, professor at USI – Università della Svizzera italiana and partner of the European project Orbis, which focuses on AI-augmented deliberative democracy. During the panel “What is the place of the Aristotelian logos in conflict prevention and resolution in our contemporary poleis?”, Greco offered deep reflections on the role of Aristotelian logos as a tool for conflict prevention and resolution in today’s societies.
Her talk emphasized how argumentation – a central element of Aristotle’s rhetoric and dialectics – remains crucial in designing AI systems that enhance, rather than replace, citizens’ deliberative capabilities.
The experience represented a valuable opportunity to bridge classical philosophical insights with the practical democratic experimentation led by Orbis, advancing the idea of technology in service of democracy.
