AI, Big Data, and Democracy, an event part of the AI UK Fringe co-organised by ORBIS and other projects in the task forceAI4Gov, ITHACA, KT4D

AI UK Fringe, organized by The Alan Turing Institute—the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence—serves as a platform for showcasing cutting-edge developments in AI and data science. Established in 2015 and headquartered in the British Library, London, the institute expanded its focus to include artificial intelligence in 2017 following a government directive.
The “AI, Big Data and Democracy @ AI Fringe 2024” event featured a specialised workshop on “AI, Big Data, and Democracy,” showcasing expert insights and the latest tools designed to enhance democratic processes.
The workshop was structured into two main sections over three hours:
1. Expert keynotes: The first segment featured presentations from leading experts in AI, democracy, and ethics. These keynotes provided foundational knowledge and current perspectives on the role of AI in shaping democratic discourse. The section was followed by a discussion, allowing participants to ask questions and interact with the speakers.
2. Interactive demonstrations: The second part of the workshop included live demonstrations of innovative tools developed for supporting AI in deliberative settings. Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with these tools, providing a hands-on experience that illustrated the practical applications of AI technologies in enhancing democratic engagement. This workshop session consisted into a session where attendees could see the tools and participate in gathering feedback.
Recordings and slides from the event are available on the ORBIS Zenodo community page:
This event underscored the commitment of the Task Force to explore and address the challenges and opportunities at the intersection of AI, big data, and democratic governance.
